Coming back in 2026, after Winter break, the Financial Math teaching job being filled was top news at Sahuaro High School. Financial Math has had it’s trials and errors since being semi-filled with substitutes and a long term substitute, Mrs. Gandee; but Mr. George has chosen to take the full-time role.
Before his presence in Sahuaro, Mr. George had a 25 year weatherman career across Tucson, Phoenix, and Houston. He got his start to teaching in Houston, certified in math and science, Mr. George has fulfilled his childhood dream of being a teacher. Moving from weatherman to a teacher wasn’t as difficult as many may assume, “I didn’t just present the weather, I got to teach a little bit in each segment, like how dust devils form!” But since leaving Houston he’s been nothing short of positive, “I’m so excited to be back in Tucson, because now I can see mountains and hike.”
Mr. George’s first day here was a bit of a challenge, he shared he only got access to his computer and all his teaching needs the Monday morning everyone returned to school, “It gave me a little bit of a mess.” As he navigated that obstacle he also found not knowing anyone’s name was driving him insane, “I know maybe two dozen names now, out of maybe 137 kids.” This specific challenge comes from entering a school year that’s halfway done, but he’s managing his way the best he can. Mr. George also said one of his priorities is fixing his classroom’s atmosphere, “I like my room to be really cozy, like Mr. Ortiz’s room!” This way his classroom is more true to him as a teacher and creates a safe environment for his students.
Mr. George teaches a real world class and he wants his students to remember that. It’s not just a high school credit; it’s preparation for adult life, “Being able to manage your finances, not get into debt, or get over your head” are just a few things you can learn your senior year with him. Mr. George says thank you to all staff and students who have been really supportive of his presence. Sahuaro Cougars are proud to have a new Cougar staff joining us!
