Madi Jordan, a sophomore, has been intertwined with music since 6th grade. Starting with the cello, she excelled in the orchestra, and after seeing the Sahuaro Guitar Orchestra perform in her 8th-grade year, Madi knew she wanted to join.
Freshman year, Madi immediately put her roots down in the Sahuaro community. She joined the beginning guitar class and stayed for one semester before she was switched into the advanced class in her second semester. She also joined the orchestra class and the Colorguard in the Cougar Marching Band.
Madi was inspired to join Colorguard by her older brother Devin, who was a senior at the time. “I saw him perform at games and wanted to be a part of the Marching Band with him, and saw Colorguard as a good opportunity.”
Though Madi joined later in the season, she took the time and practiced nonstop. Madi worked super hard during her first Marching Band season and joined Winterguard to further challenge herself and grow as a spinner. For her first Winterguard season, Sahuaro joined Cholla and Pueblo for their season because of low enrollment. While working with other guards, Madi gained a new perspective on how other teams practice and work together, especially last year, because the program was new and underdeveloped.
After her first Marching Band and Winterguard seasons, Madi applied to be Colorguard Captain her sophomore year, which she got without fail. Since she took over as captain, her team has received three captions specifically for her Colorguard team, which means that her team beat every other Colorguard in their division and made their band proud.
“Being Colorguard Captain pushed me out of my comfort a lot and made me gain skills like learning how to speak up and how to lead. It is overwhelming at times, but it’s worth seeing your team improve.” Madi went on to talk about a high point of Colorguard these past two years. “My favorite memory from band was my first U of A Band Day. It was really cool to perform on such an iconic field and to be a part of something so unique.”
Now that Madi is nearing the end of her sophomore year, she’s started thinking about the path after high school. Though her original plan going into high school was to become a nurse, being the Madi we know and love, she couldn’t give up music. And that’s when she learned about music therapy. Though Madi isn’t entirely sure where she wants to be after high school, music therapy is a good option to mix both of her interests.
Madi has made a huge difference in the music community at Sahuaro and helped build the Colorguard program from the ground up. Thanks to Madi, her hard work, and the help of other guards, our Sahuaro’s colorguard program is performing this Winterguard season.
