For Sahuaro senior Tyler McNeal, this year’s theater production represents far more than another show on the school calendar; it’s the achievement he has been aiming for since his sophomore year. After years of dedication, countless rehearsals, and steady growth within the program, McNeal is finally stepping into the spotlight as the lead in You’ve Ruined a Perfectly Good Mystery! The production is a fast-paced interactive adventure-comedy that hands an unusual amount of control to the audience, letting them shape the direction and even the ending of the story.

The play centers around a pompous detective and a spirited, quick-witted doctor as they take on a supervillain straight out of a classic spy film. However, their adventure is anything but straightforward. They must navigate a deliberately chaotic storyline driven by an exaggerated, larger-than-life narrator whose dramatic flair keeps both characters and viewers guessing. Because the audience chooses what happens at major turning points, no two performances are ever the same. “The audience is the architect of the story,” McNeal explained. “Their behavior and actions can completely alter our performance from one night to another, which makes every show feel brand new.”

Sahuaro Theater will present three matinee performances and two evening shows: December 4th at 9:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., December 5th at the same times, and a final matinee on December 6th at 1:00 p.m. With so many opportunities to attend and each performance unfolding differently, the cast expects many audience members to return for a second or even third viewing.

For McNeal, taking on the protagonist role is not just an exciting creative challenge but also a meaningful personal milestone. “This play carries a lot of meaning to me because it’s my first role as the protagonist in a Sahuaro theater production,” he said. “Being able to work with such an amazing collection of people who have put in the same amount of work that I do makes the experience all the better.”

He strongly encourages students to attend, not only to experience the comedy and audience-driven format but also to support Sahuaro’s growing theater and tech departments. McNeal believes that stepping away from screens for a night and enjoying a live performance is refreshing in a way many don’t expect. “It’s worth it,” he added. “You’ll get to watch something funny, energetic, and completely different from anything you’d see on your phone.”

Adults can expect the same action, humor, and surprises, plus the added enjoyment of seeing different outcomes each night. McNeal even suggests parents consider coming more than once: “Because the audience chooses the story, there are numerous different scenes and endings. Come see the show on multiple nights, and you’ll see for yourself!”

Preparing for the role hasn’t been without its challenges. McNeal has spent weeks mastering a British accent, polishing stage-combat routines, and refining the timing required for an interactive comedy. Still, he feels each challenge has helped him grow as a performer. This show marks his fifth production at Sahuaro following standout performances in The Crucible and The Dream. Now stepping confidently into the role of the Detective, McNeal is ready to guide audiences through a mystery that promises to be anything but predictable.
