Senior night is always an emotional milestone in any high school sports season, and for Sahuaro High School’s girls’ soccer team, it was truly a touching night. On January 28th, the girls went up against Salpointe High School. While it was an unfortunate loss for Sahuaro, the night was about much more than the final score. It was a celebration of dedication, leadership, and lasting impact of four seniors who helped build the team throughout this season.
The evening started with a special ceremony honoring our graduating players. The underclassmen of the team showed up almost 2 hours before kickoff to set up and decorate the bleachers. Along with that, they prepared gift baskets for the seniors, making sure every detail reflected their love and appreciation for these girls. All of the effort put into these posters, baskets, and decorations showed just how much the seniors mean to their teammates.
Before the game started, each senior was announced alongside their future plans, memories, and accomplishments. The girls walked across the field with tears in their eyes, whilst everyone in the stands and on the field cheered them on. This was definitely the most emotional moment of the night.
Lillian Lucero shared that after graduation, “…I plan to go to college to study psychology and criminology,” a path that reflects both ambition and desire to help others. Lillian’s kind, caring personality and uplifting spirit will be very missed.
Kennedy Celentano, one of the team captains, reflected on her favorite memory: “My favorite memory on the team has been making it to the championships and traveling my freshman and sophomore year.” Kennedy played soccer at Sahuaro for 3 years, taking a break in junior year and returning this year, ready to be a leader!Â
The other captain, Kendra Gonzales, plans on going to college to become an ultrasound technician. Known for her determination and strong presence on the field, Gonzales has been an important role model for the underclassmen, demonstrating what it means to compete with heart and passion. Kendra’s integrity will be missed.
Savanna Horning has not yet decided where she will attend college, but she has opportunities to continue playing soccer at a higher level- a testament to her skill and commitment to the sport. Savanna has always shown strong leadership and love for her team. She’s a great leader on and off the field, and she will be missed.
In a show of sportsmanship, Sahuaro also took the time to recognize Salpointe’s seniors and present them with flowers before the game. This gesture highlighted the respect shared between the two schools and reminded everyone that senior night is about honoring athletes from both teams. This part of the ceremony was truly a tear-jerker.
The team will deeply miss these four athletes, but their influence will continue to inspire the players who follow. Senior night may mark the end of one chapter, but it also celebrates everything these players have achieved and the bright future that lies ahead for every one of them.
