Before Bad Bunny became one of the biggest artists in the world, he was Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio from Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. Born on March 10, 1994, he grew up in a regular household with his two brothers, Bernie Ocasio and Bysael Ocasio. His mom was an English teacher named Lysaurie, and his dad, Tito, worked as a truck driver.
As a kid, he lived a pretty normal childhood; he loved watching cartoons and listening to music. When his mother noticed how much he enjoyed singing, she signed him up to sing in the church choir, which became his first real experience performing in front of a crowd.
As he got older, Bad Bunny fell in love with reggaeton and Latin trap. He started writing songs and uploading them to SoundCloud while working at a grocery store bagging groceries. His big break came in 2016 when his song “Diles” went viral. After that, his career quickly took off.
According to Billboard, he became “one of the most streamed artists in the world,” helping Spanish-language music reach a wider global audience (Billboard). His success proved that artists do not need to sing in English to dominate international charts.
What makes Bad Bunny stand out from other artists is his authenticity. He has always stayed true to his culture, personal style, and how he shows himself in public. In an interview with Time, he said, “I’ve always done whatever I want,” explaining that he creates music on his own terms (Time). That confidence and individuality are a big reason why fans admire him.
Bad Bunny has always supported his Puerto Rican culture. He actively challenges toxic masculinity, champions LGBTQ+ rights, and supports Puerto Rican community initiatives, including over $2 million in donations via his Good Bunny Foundation.
In 2022, he made history when his album Un Verano Sin Ti became the first Spanish-language album nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys. The Recording Academy described it as an album that “celebrates Puerto Rican culture while expanding the boundaries of reggaeton” (Grammy.com).
Beyond music, Bad Bunny has proven he has different talents than just the booth. As he also wrestles for the WWE. His first ever match was on April 10th, 2021, and it was a tag team match defeating The Miz and John Morrison. He’s also been in Happy Gilmore 2 playing as Oscar Mejias and played as Lookout in Fast in Furious 9.
From being in a church choir to now selling out stadiums worldwide, Bad Bunny’s journey shows that staying true to yourself can lead to global success. This journey is a perfect example of how where ever your from you can still be a world wide superstar like Bad Bunny.
