Every March, Women’s History Month invites us to recognize the achievements of women throughout history — and nowhere are those achievements more transformational than in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Despite facing systemic barriers and often being overlooked, women in STEM have changed how we understand the world, built the technology we rely on, and paved the way for future generations of innovators.
Today, we honor just a few of the trailblazers whose work reshaped science and technology — and whose stories continue to inspire young scientists everywhere.
One of the most iconic figures in all of science, Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and remains the only person to receive it in both Physics and Chemistry. Her groundbreaking work on radioactivity revolutionized how we understand atomic structure and has had lasting impacts on medicine and physics.
Long before modern computers existed, Ada Lovelace predicted the power of programmable machines. Working with Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine in the 1800s, she wrote what many historians consider the first algorithm ever intended for processing by a machine. Her insight laid the foundation for modern computing.
Katherine Johnson played a crucial role in NASA’s early space missions, calculating orbital trajectories that helped send astronauts safely into space and back during the Space Race. Her work advanced human spaceflight and shattered both racial and gender barriers in STEM. In 2015, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions.
In computer networking, few names are more important than Radia Perlman. Her invention of the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) made modern networks reliable and scalable — a foundation for how data moves across the internet today. Because of this, she’s often called the “Mother of the Internet.”
Belgian mathematician Ingrid Daubechies helped bring wavelets into mainstream mathematics and engineering, transforming image compression, signal processing, and data analysis. In 2000, she became the first woman to receive the National Academy of Sciences Award in Mathematics.
American engineer Wanda Gass helped develop one of the first commercially viable digital signal processors and has spent her career advocating for young women in STEM. Her work at Texas Instruments set new technological standards and inspired future engineers.
Historically, women’s scientific achievements were often ignored or credited to male colleagues — a bias historians call the Matilda Effect. “The phenomenon is named after the American suffragette, activist, and sociologist Matilda Joslyn Gage. In 1870, she wrote a pamphlet entitled Woman as Inventor, condemning the then-widespread idea that women lacked inventive drive and scientific talent.” But today, women innovators are winning honors, leading breakthroughs, and mentoring the next generation of scientists and engineers.
From physicists and computer programmers to mathematicians and engineers, these women reflect the deep impact that diverse voices bring to science and society. As educators, researchers, and role models, they remind us that innovation thrives when everyone has a chance to contribute.
