This year’s boys’ soccer season at Sahuaro High School was a journey defined by unwavering Cougar pride and the pure joy of the game. For the players, the season was not just about the numbers on a scoreboard, but about the growth they experienced as athletes and the friendships they forged on the turf. From the first official kickoff against Rio Rico in December to the final whistles of January 2026, the team focused on a positive mindset that turned every challenge into an opportunity for improvement.
One of the brightest highlights of the year was the leadership provided by the upperclassmen. Seniors like Jeremiah Bonds, James Calles, and Robert Romero-Luna took it upon themselves to mentor the freshmen, ensuring the team felt like a family from day one.
This positive culture was most visible during Senior Night, where the atmosphere was electric with celebration. The team gathered to honor their veterans with personalized posters and cheers, reminding everyone that the Sahuaro soccer program is built on mutual respect and shared memories.
On the pitch, the Cougars showed incredible heart during their most competitive matches. In a standout game against Caydon Del Rio in early January 2026, the team achieved a high by scoring two goals. The sideline erupted in cheers as the players demonstrated the technical skills they had been honing under Coach Lopez. Every save by goalkeepers Braydon Capello and Adrian Trujillo was met with high-fives and encouragement from the bench, proving that the team’s spirit remained high regardless of the pressure.
Braydon Capello mentioned that his favorite moment in this season was, “Definitely the Douglas games, I played good and everyone played with passion and vibes.”
When Devin Green was asked what his favorite memories about the soccer team were, he said, “The bus rides home after an away game.”
Beyond the wins and losses, the 2025-2026 season was a success because of the sportsmanship the Cougars displayed. Sahuaro has a proud tradition of being recognized for character, often being cited for honors like the 4A Glen Treadaway Sportsmanship Award (24-25). This year was no different, as the boys handled every game with dignity and class, representing their school with honor across the state of Arizona.
As the season concluded this past January, the players looked back on their time together with big smiles. They focused on the progress they made as individuals and the fun they had during long bus rides and team dinners.
The 2025-2026 season proved that success at Sahuaro is measured by the strength of the team’s bond and the positive energy they bring to the field every single day. The future of Sahuaro soccer looks bright, fueled by the resilience and happiness found in this unforgettable season.
