Sahuaro offers a variety of different electives that could be useful in your career, or just to have fun with. Some of Sahuaro’s current electives are AVID, library practice, teacher aid, office aid, newspaper, yearbook, student government, and AP psychology! However, the real question is, which one should you take next year?
AVID is a program that helps students succeed academically and prepare for college. It teaches skills like study habits, time management, and more. It’s an elective available to all grade levels, but you have to apply and go through an interview process to get into it. If you are serious about your academic future, AVID would be a great choice for you!
Library practice would be a great elective if you’re into reading or organizing! During this period, you’ll shelve books, and even repair some books. You also learn how the library system works and how the books get put away all nice and organized. Signing up for teacher’s aid is also great if you enjoy helping and like the feeling of grading work. While being a teacher’s aide, you will help the teacher with many things. Sometimes you will grade papers, or even help with the lessons. Every teacher has a different curriculum, so you might not be doing exactly that, but you would be helping out in general. Similarly, being an office aid helps the staff. You will sign students in and out of school and could even give them late passes while the office staff is busy with other work However, only juniors and seniors can do this.
Being a part of our school’s newspaper, The Paper Cut, will be a great fit if you enjoy writing. Every week you will write a new article, either targeted towards Sahuaro, a topic of your choosing, or headline news. Being a part of the Paper Cut will help improve your writing and social skills, as you’ll have to interview people or ask questions about what’s going around on campus! In addition to that, being a part of Sahuaro’s yearbook would be a great choice if you love taking photos! You will help create the yearbook that goes out to the students who purchase it. You can help design what the yearbook will look like and what it will include.
Student government, also known as StuCo, would be fun to sign up for if you enjoy helping plan exciting things for the school. You’ll help set up the dances, spirit week, and all the fun school spirit activities. If you like organizing activities with people, student government will be a great fit for you.
Last but not least, we have AP psychology. Not only is it an elective, but it also counts as college credit if you pass the AP exam. You will learn how the mind works and different disorders in the brain. If you sign up for AP Psych, you’ll have the option to take the exam or not. If you do decide to take it, you could get a college class knocked out of the way if you pass with a 3 or above. There are many elective choices, but remember, you can pick classes you think you’ll enjoy or exceed in, so don’t feel pressured to sign up for a class you think you won’t enjoy!
