Jose Fernandez, pitcher of the Miami Marlins and two of his friends died in a boat wreck on Sunday, September 25. Fernandez and two others hit a jetty at full speed off of Miami Beach. He was not killed by drowning but by the impact of the boat. The 32-foot boat was found after 3 a.m where two bodies were found crushed underneath the boat and the other on the jetty. Sunday’s game with the Marlins and the Atlanta Braves was canceled out of respect as both organizations and the Miami community responded with immense support for his family and loved ones. Last week, Fernandez posted that he was expecting a baby with his girlfriend, Maria Arias Grieves. His teammates were devastated to hear the news about his death. “When I think about Jose, I see such a little boy. The way he played, there was just joy with him,” said the Marlins manager, Don Mattingly.
