Ylena Gross is a junior who has been playing basketball since she was three years old. She says, “My parents always joked that I was basically born with a basketball.” Her father introduced her to the game, setting the foundation for what has become one of the most defining parts of her life.
Ylena plays point guard, a position that fits her perfectly. She thrives on the competitiveness of the sport and sees basketball as more than just a game; it’s her outlet. “It’s the one thing that has always consistently been there through all my moves,” she explains, reflecting on how basketball has been a source of stability through life’s many changes.
Her hard work and passion have already paid off. Ylena recalls two moments that stand out in her young career: receiving her first unofficial offer from UCSD and scoring 30 points in a game against AZ Compass. “I felt extremely blessed and grateful,” she says, “but at the same time, I wasn’t satisfied. I only want more for myself.” That hunger for growth defines her approach to the game and life.
When asked what sets her apart, Ylena points out her speed and court vision, skills that have helped her shine. But her success doesn’t come without sacrifice. Balancing school, training, and travel requires serious dedication. “Working bell to bell and doing work whenever I have the time helps me manage it,” she says.
Ylena credits her parents for keeping her grounded and motivated. “Seeing how much they believe in me and how hard they’ve worked to get me in certain positions pushes me every day,” she shares. Even when life presented challenges, such as frequent moves, her dad being overseas, and battling injuries, she stayed focused. “I just kept working and trusted in God’s plan for me.”
Looking ahead, Ylena’s goals are clear: she aims to play Division I Basketball, study sports medicine, and eventually become an athletic trainer or orthopedic surgeon after a professional career. Powerful advice Ylena gives to others: “Give it your all, and to make sure you stay focused on your goals, don’t let anyone distract you or disturb your peace. Never compare yourself to anyone or their journey because everyone’s journey through life is different.”
Prayer has become a huge part of her life, especially during tough times and before her games. Her faith keeps her centered, and she trusts deeply in what God has planned for her life. Through prayer and reflection, she’s learned the importance of surrendering control and believing that everything happens for a reason. Her trust in God gives her strength and peace, both on and off the court.
With talent, drive, and a deep sense of purpose, Ylena Gross is proving that with time, faith, focus, and hard work, dreams can turn into reality.
