Artificial intelligence is a new tool used for various purposes, such as asking questions and editing essays, but does it cross the line when students use it to do their schoolwork? I think so for three main reasons.
The first issue is when you ask AI to “help you rephrase something” to make it longer or sound more persuasive. It provides you with exactly what you need, rather than offering hints or tips on what to change to improve its sound, which is what it should be doing. It will perfectly rephrase what you’re writing about. So, all you need to do is tell your AI assistant what the essay is supposed to be on, and it will build an almost perfect essay, so the student won’t have to do much work.
This brings me to my next point with AI, you see, the thing about this is, when AI is used, it doesn’t sound like a student at a school with an average to high writing level; it sounds more like an excellent language model, which is what AI essentially is in most cases. So, when it’s used, it’s easy to recognize when it gets to being graded because all the teacher needs to do is look at your past work and compare it, which is more difficult. Teachers can also use an AI detector to detect if the writing is AI or actual work. Also, in tests like State Testing or Benchmarks, there will be no availability for AI, so when that time comes around, and in the test, you can’t prove you write as well as you do on normal assignments, then the teacher in that class will really start to question if you deserve to pass their class.
My final gripe with AI is that it can sometimes affect your in-school privacy, like collecting your data, which should only be monitored by the school. What could be done about AI in schools? well, you might think about blocking it, but some teachers who use AI as a tool to help the students might be upset, so a great solution is to make sure AI is monitored when it’s being used, and it should only be used in very certain assignments when it’s actually needed for the assignment.
In conclusion, I believe that AI should not be used in school. It seems more like cheating than help; it does not sound like an average student, and it won’t match your test scores, causing the teacher to reconsider your grades, and finally, it affects your in-school privacy and the stuff only the school should have access to. Taking this into consideration, what do you think about AI being allowed in schools?
