At Sahuaro High School, there is an amazing place behind building 200 where you can sit, read, laugh, and experience a relaxing time. That place is the library. The library is a big open space with an amazing librarian, Mrs Krieg. Krieg has been at Sahuaro for six years, since 2019. When she first came to Sahuaro, the library wasn’t like how many students perceive it today.
Since Krieg arrived, she has added a wide variety of resources to give students who visit the library a chance to have fun and explore their creativity. She has added a big Lego wall, board games, puzzles, card games like Uno, a sewing machine, crochet materials, and even a 3d printer.
As of the 25th of August, the library has been open during lunch for kids to be in a comfortable, relaxing, air-conditioned room to help beat the heat or leave the cold. Unfortunately, it is on a first-come, first-served basis, as there are lunch passes you need to possess in order to enter. There are only 50 passes, so get them before school while they’re hot!
The library also has a small variety of clubs that hold their meetings there. So far, clubs that meet there are the Sahuaro Book Club and FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes). Both are open to new students during lunch on Mondays, which means that the rest of the library is closed on those days so that the clubs can have a peaceful meeting without the distractions of others.
In the library, there are hygiene items available in case there’s a day where you may have forgotten something or are in need of anything. They have supplies such as toothpaste, dental floss, deodorant, shampoo, feminine products, and even some school materials like notebooks, pencils, and pencil pouches for a three-ring binder. It is a main goal of Mrs. Kreig for kids to feel safe in school, “It’s a place where I feel is a safe place and I like being able to provide a safe place for students.”
Mrs. Krieg also has some mascots as part of her library. She had two neon tetra fish; however, one passed, and it will be remembered in all of Sahuaro Library history. On a lighter note, one of her fish is still alive and on display at the front of the library help desk. Other than her fish, she has 10 hissing cockroaches. Mrs. Krieg shares, “Love them or hate them, they really are not that bad.”
Also, on her library help desk, she has snacks available for everyone to buy. Everything is just a dollar; it includes things such as cold drinks, snacks, chips, and even ramen noodle cups. All the proceeds made from selling these snacks go to helping fund the book club’s new book purchases.
Mrs. Krieg and her aids do their best to give a relaxing, comforting experience for those who enter the library. Coming from someone who has been going to the library every day for the past few years, I can confidently say that is exactly what happens when I step into Mrs. Kreig’s library.
