Sahuaro High School Cougars are welcoming 3 new Girls’ Volleyball Coaches for the 2025 season! The summer went as usual, with Coach Haynes and Coach Connor running skills and conditioning sessions in June, and both Cougar camps in July. The volleyball girls, new players and returners alike, didn’t expect the news waiting to hit them. Late July, news spread that all 3 positions, Head Varsity Coach, JVA Coach, and JVB Coach, were open for interviews. The 3 new coaches were to be announced on August 13th, 2025!
Coach Connor, who was the JVA Coach and Varsity assistant for the last few years, was planning on interviewing for the Head Coaching position, while also being in charge of open-gyms and tryouts for the start of the girls’ season.
Problems occurred the week of August 5-8 when open-gyms were supposed to be held after school for athletes to practice before their tryouts. Three of those days were canceled due to extreme heat measures, when the boys’ football team had to take both inside gyms.
While Varsity tryouts were originally going to be held August 11th and 12th, those days were now open gyms, and all 3 teams would try out on the 13th and 14th, the days the girls were introduced to their new coaches.
The girls’ Varsity Coach for 2025 is Connor Wedman, whom the girls are more than excited to be alongside for the new season. Connor is 23 years old and has been coaching at Sahuaro for 5 years. He graduated from Sahuaro High School in 2020.
Connor had Coach Wharam for his volleyball season when he was at Sahuaro, and he even helps alongside Coach Wharam for the boys’ volleyball. “I’m super excited about this upcoming season. We have a program full of hard-working and motivated kids. If we continue progressing the way we have this season, I think this season will be a huge success, ” Coach Connor said.
Girls’ JVA team welcomed Coach Wharam for 2025, excited to teach them new skills to get them ready for varsity. Coach Wharam is the JV boys basketball coach and head varsity coach for boys volleyball. This will be his first year coaching JVA girls volleyball, but he is eager to get the girls all the wins. His knowledge and style of coaching offer insight to the volleyball girls, hopefully directing them on the path to varsity next year.
Last but not least, Coach Nic was welcomed by the JVB girls’ volleyball team, eager to get their high school volleyball journey started. All the JVB girls are new to Sahuaros’ Volleyball program this year, and Coach Nic has already begun with skill conditioning for the girls, getting them prepared for their first game next week!
All three girls’ volleyball teams are working extra hard, learning as much as they can from their new coaches, and getting ready to dominate their first away game against Crismon, Wednesday, 27th, 2025! Make sure to come support your girls’ volleyball team at their first home game against Poston Butte, September 3rd, 2025, at 4:00 pm, 5:00 pm, and 6:00 pm. Good luck, Coaches! We’re excited for the 2025-2026 season.
