On April 9th, Sahuaro’s track team traveled to Salpointe Catholic for a dual meet. There were a total of 12 personal records (PRs), out of around 30 participants, showing tremendous growth for the team as a whole. The highlight of the meet was the boys’ and girls’ 4×1 relay, which was a precursor to their performance at the TUSD Championship ‘Breezy Leach’ meet, the next Friday. At the Salpointe meet, both relay teams won by a great margin, with the boys running a 45.22 and the girls running a 50.40. Although the majority of the team went, many people only ran one event to prepare for their upcoming invite.
The ‘Breezy Leach’ meet excited everyone because it determines the best team in
TUSD. Montana Poe, a senior track athlete, said before the meet, “This meet is a guaranteed win. We won last year, and we will win again. I am confident in that.” Sure enough, she was right. The girls won 7 events and accumulated a total score of 175. The boys placed 3rd, but Sahuaro won the combined district championship, which adds the points of the boys and girls. The girls were awarded a trophy for placing first, and Sahuaro was able to keep the traveling trophy that has lived at Sahuaro since last year. By the end of the week, the team had accumulated over 20 PRs and a broken school record.

According to athletic.net, Zariyah Whitlock, a senior on the team, broke the school record for the girls’ 100 meters with a time of 12.24. This time set her at #1 in Arizona Division 3. She is also #6 for D3 in the 200m. She is committed to run track at Pima College (look out for her on Signing Day on May 1st!).
Drazzil Brehmer, a senior on the team, said, “Basically, it went well for the whole team, many people medaled, and we won the meet overall for the second year in a row. Me personally, coming in 4th place, getting beat by .1 second, definitely some competition, but everyone did their part and won us points.”
On Friday night, after many TikToks were made and pictures were taken, the girls arrived home at Sahuaro as three-time champs and and the team kept the traveling trophy at home (where it belongs) for another year.
