On March 21st, 2025, Disney released a live-action Snow White movie, starring Gal Gadot and Rachel Zegler. Since then, the film has been titled as one of the lowest-rated movies in history, with a 1.5/10 on IMDb. Part of the reason the movie is getting so much hate is because of Zegler’s off-screen attitude. In multiple interviews, Rachel said many negative things about the original Snow White movie. She described it as “weird” and “terrifying,” and said that after watching it once, she never picked it up again.
A lot of controversy comes from the fact that Disney used CGI for the seven dwarves rather than hiring actors with dwarfism. There have been many protests about this, and people are even encouraging others to boycott the movie. Choon Tan, a performer from North London who has dwarfism, says the movie’s decision to use CGI for the seven dwarves is “absolutely absurd and discriminating in a sense.”
Another reason the movie is receiving so much hate is because of how different the movie is from the original 1937 film. Snow White is known to be a soft, quiet princess who falls in love. Zegler wanted to add her own twist to the movie, so she made it a movie about Snow White dreaming about becoming a strong leader, rather than falling in love with a prince. In an interview, she said, “She’s not going to be saved by the prince and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love, she’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be…” This statement caused a lot of people to become more hateful toward Zegler and leave bad reviews on the movie.
People describe Zegler as “woke” or a “brat.” Some of the review bombing came after she shared pro-Palestine and anti-Trump posts. Zegler said anyone that did not vote for Kamala Harris should unfollow her, which was another reason many people chose not to see the movie. Overall, most of the movie’s hate is due to Zegler’s negativity. The Disney movie is now looking at a loss of $115 million.
