Exploring your prospective high school is a coming-of-age moment you’ll remember forever, so we aim to make it a memorable experience. Our motto here at Sahuaro is “We Have Something for Everyone”, so you’ll never have to worry about finding the right club or elective; we have ample amounts of course and club offerings. If a club or class just doesn’t fit, we have an amazing team of counselors to help you sort out the start (and continuation) of your high school career!

What every freshman awaits… their first high school football game. Our school offers a Freshman, JV, and Varsity football team; we can coach every level. Football practices all summer through the end of fall. Games are held August-November. Team members also are enrolled in a 6th period football class.

Cheerleaders! The essential part of every game. Cheer has 2 tryouts per year: Regular and Summer Season. As a Sahuaro cheerleader, you’ll cheer at football and basketball games, pep rallies, special events, and possibly a state-wide competition.

Marching Band and Colorguard-Two peas in a pod! Colorguard has both a fall and winter season with a summer camp in July. In Colorguard you’ll learn flag tosses and dances. Marching Band is a 0 period class held for an hour before school starts. They also practice after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. After Football season, if you join Winter Drumline, you’ll continue your after school practices. Marching Band also performs at pep rallies and events such as Future Freshman Night.

Girls Volleyball-We have a JV-B, JV-A, and Varsity team, and as you can see, at least two of them were good enough for awards! We offer a 3-day summer practice for interested students. We also offer a 3-day open gym closer to the dates of tryouts. Tryouts are in August and the season lasts August-October

The most refreshing sport in the state: Swimming! Our team has won 2 state championships and produced two Olympic medalists. You’ll learn tools such as breath control, agility, and strength. After school, you’ll ride a bus with the other members to Udall Park to practice in their pool. The season lasts from August-October.

Wrestling: AKA Gatos Wrestling Club. The official season lasts November-January, Off-season training is held February-May. This year, our wrestling club is opening up to middle schoolers. As long as you’re a TUSD student in 7th-12th grade, you’re welcome to attend our Off-Season training sessions.

Boys Basketball-Our team has made it to state 10 times in the past 15 years, and have won 4 state championships in the teams history. Once again, we’ll be hosting our annual 3-week basketball fundamentals camp. Students entering 6th-12th grade are eligible.

Girls Basketball- In the past, they’ve won 2 state championships and have competed in 5. Open gyms are available during the summer, and in November before tryouts. The season lasts from November-February, unless the team advances to state.

Tennis-Pre-season practices begin in February, while the season starts in March. You’ll play games against one other person, and then also games with a partner against another set of 2 people.

Pharmacy Tech is a CTE program. CTE Programs allow you to earn some form of certificate allowing you to work straight out of high school. This elective is math and science heavy and is available to incoming 10th and 11th graders. Successfully completing this program and passing your final exam will make you a certified pharmacy technician.

Culinary-Another one of our renowned CTE programs. In this class you’ll learn proper restaurant safety and cutting techniques. At the end of your 2nd year you’ll take the ServSafe Food Safety and Training test. Culinary provides imperative experience to those wanting to go into the food and restaurant industry.

The main objective of AVID is to prepare to apply and attend college. The underclassmen levels focus more on setting a good high school foundation and just beginning to look at possible career paths. The upperclassmen levels look more into scholarships and narrowing down your college choices. This class is a great choice for any student of any grade to prepare for your future!

Guitar! If you’re committed to the classical guitar and want to constantly improve, this class is the perfect fit for you. Guitar has three different levels: Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. Beginning and Intermediate are perfect for people who haven’t played at all up to about 2 years of experience. Advanced guitar is intense and requires a heavy commitment. This class is for players with 2-3+ years of experience and who are ready to work hard every day. This class works bell to bell, so if guitar is your favorite thing, this is the perfect elective for you.

Student Council- From pep rallies, to dances, to spirit week, Student Council plans it all. To be apart of Student Council, it requires an application to be accepted by the class teacher Ms. Trujilo. Joining Student Council sets you up with a not only a support system, but also a family for all of high school.

Theatre-Lights, Camera, Action! Theatre has many different pathways, from beginning, to intermediate, to advanced theater, and also Tech Crew. Theater has multiple opportunities throughout the school year to try out for multiple plays, and next semester even musicals. Students will develop acting, performing, singing, and agility skills. Next year, a film studies class is also being added as a theater-esque option.

The one and only-The Paper Cut! The Paper Cut is our school’s online newspaper, run by students. Open to all grades, this elective teaches you professional writing, photography, and interviewing skills. Students will cover sporting, fine arts, and elective events. If you’re extroverted, don’t procrastinate and love writing, come join The Paper Cut!

Choir-Choir has options such as Vocal Music and Culturally Relevant Choir. CRC focuses more on music from certain heritages and backgrounds, using music as a way of connection between humans. Vocal Music and Concert Choir both learn classic choir music and performs at concert, competitions, and school events.

Spanish! If your middle school offered Spanish, this is great course to take with Mr. Lane to continue you education of the language. After your first year with him, you’ll be able to take a second level of the course. If you’ve never taken a language before, this class is still great for you! The first level will teach you the basics of the Spanish language. We offer a French class as well.

Latinos Unidos! A club meant for students to celebrate and uplift Hispanic culture. This is a great way for Hispanic students to meet people of the same background and discover their roots while learning about others experiences.

Book Club-Where you can read till your heart’s content. An after school club for avid readers. You’ll receive one book a month and a number of pages to read per week. Once a week in the library on Mondays, you’ll meet to discuss those pages. For holidays, there is always a fun party with a movie, pizza, snacks, deserts, and games after school. If you love reading and a tight-knit community, this is the club for you!

GATE English-for the freshman who love reading and writing, and also excelled in 8th grade English. GATE English students will use critical thinking skills while working in lots of group projects as a class.

Mr. Christian: promoting E-Sports and Robotics! E-Sports is an after school club. Members will practice Mario Party and then have a tournament against other schools. Robotics is an engineering focused club open to STEM lovers of any grade. Students are also able to take a dual credit engineering class taught by Mr. Davis to further their skills.

Cougar Link Crew: a helping hand for new Cougars. Available to upcoming Juniors and Seniors, Cougar Link Crew allows upperclassman to help the new freshman classes settle into high school. Members have training days in the summer before leading freshman orientation all by themselves. During the school year, members help underclassmen adjust and answer any questions they may have.

Nya Brown, Editor
Nya Brown, a sophomore, is excited to begin her 2nd year of The Paper Cut. Her favorite kinds of articles to do are on guitar concerts, Spirit Week slideshows, Cougar Tales, and any other event she attends. Nya is currently involved in cheerleading, Advanced Guitar, Book Club, Culinary Club, and her job as a party host; she is looking to expand her extracurriculars with things such as the JTED cosmetology program, Black Student Union, Student Council, Link Crew, and the National Honors Society. In her (little) free time, Nya likes to sing, go on walks, and organize.
Nya is originally from Florida but moved to Arizona (where she’ll stay until she goes off to college) when she was 10. She also used to live in Maryland for a year. As an adult, she hopes to move to Massachusetts and start a life there. After graduating high school, Nya plans to attend an academically rigorous school on the Northeast Coast. As for her future, she plans on getting her Master’s in Public Health and working towards becoming an epidemiologist.
