Dear Professional Sports Teams,
Why is it that you prefer to take a tall person over a shorter one in most sports? While this does not apply to every sport, it
does apply to quite a few. Especially some of the more popular sports like basketball or rugby. I have seen more than one
occasion when there was a choice between a tall player and a short one and the tall player was picked – but not because he was better than the short player. It’s because he had the better build. I just think it’s unfair sometimes when a player on the shorter side puts in a lot of work to get good at the sport they play just to not be given a chance to play at a higher level.
Now I play three sports at my school, but only really one of them requires height and it happens to be the one I’m best at.
That sport is volleyball. It’s fast-paced, entertaining to watch, and it’s not as easy to play as you might think it is. There are so many things about volleyball that I love and I would love to play at the next level after high school. However, the catch is that the position I play is usually meant for a taller player. I am not a taller player; in fact I am not taller than 5’5. However I am really good at what I do so much so, that I’m already going to play varsity on my school’s volleyball team. It just frustrates me to know that if I want a better shot to play at the next level I have to grow taller but I don’t know how close I’m going to get to my goal.
To kind of back what I am saying, some of the greatest players to play their sport were not very tall. One of the greatest
examples of this is Barry Sanders who played running back in the NFL. He was one of the best players who did it and he was only 5’8 when the average is around 5’10-6’2. That is not an easy feat, especially in the NFL. Another great example of a short player being one of the best is Lionel Messi standing at 5’7. Messi is the current number one soccer player in the world and it’s not up for debate. He took the world of soccer by storm when he was just a child and never stopped until he was the best. Another one of the greatest to ever touch a ball is Diego Maradona standing at 5’5. He was the best when he played soccer.
What I’m trying to say is, don’t look past a player just because they are a bit short. Those who work for the chance to play should be given that opportunity if they really deserve it. You never know they could become the greatest to ever play their sport.
