For the past six years, Sahuaro has not had a competitive Winter Drumline, but this year they’re back, led by Mr. Guzman. The ensemble participated in their first competition of the season at Sahuarita High School on Saturday, February 8. The group has been working hard in preparation, holding morning practices from 7:30 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. with different sectionals each day, full rehearsals every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and weekend rehearsals to perfect their performance.
Competition day was a long one for the group. They arrived at school around 9 a.m. and spent the entire day rehearsing before leaving for the competition at 3 p.m. Although the team ultimately placed last, they received positive feedback and did not finish last in every category.
One of the most nerve-wracking moments of the competition came just before their performance. As they were getting into the ready line, their glockenspiel fell, causing the keys to fall out. The group quickly worked together to put the instrument back together before taking the floor, making for a memorable and high-pressured moment.
Despite the initial nerves, the performance itself was well-received. The gym was packed and the audience cheered on their performance. Mia Payette, a marimba player, described how different the experience was compared to marching band. “I always felt like I knew what was happening during marching season, but this was completely different,” she said. “We perform in a gym instead of on a field, it’s only percussion, there’s no conductor, and we have to rely on listening to each other. It’s a lot more nerve-wracking.” J Molina, center snare player, describes the experience as, “new and different, yet fun and familiar.”
With about a month before their next competition, the Drumline is focused on improving their score by at least ten points by the end of the season. Their main priorities are refining their technique and incorporating more movement into their routine. Their show, Not a Phase, tells an emotional story about someone going through an “emo phase” and finding a connection through music, which ultimately brings them back to life. The song selection, specifically arranged for the group by one of Mr. Guzman’s friends, includes In The End by Linkin Park, Stairway to Heaven by Led Zepplin, and Lights and Sounds by Yellow Card.
The team remains motivated about their upcoming performances, and with dedicated practice and a strong drive for improvement, they are determined to make their mark in the season ahead. Their next competition will be a test of their progress, and they hope to climb the rankings with their new performance.
