Wednesday, January 29, an American Airlines flight was scheduled to land in D.C. around 9:00 PM. Carrying a total of sixty passengers and four crew members, the plane was hit by a Black Hawk helicopter that was on a training mission with 3 military members aboard.
Both plummeted into the icy Potomac River leaving no survivors. Among the victims of the crash were 26 champion figure skaters and two rising stars. Officials say this event is the biggest commercial airline crash since 2001. They have identified 55 passengers and are still working to recover 14 of the missing passengers.
Clean up estimated to be finished by February 5th. Air traffic control shows the Black Hawk helicopter was flying 300 feet above the altitude designated for a flight path. American Airlines CEO says President Donald Trump called him Monday night to offer his condolences to the victims and their families. Trump states that air traffic control safety must be a top priority. He said. “We look forward to working with him on behalf of all our customers and team members in the name of safety.”
