For many high school athletes, sports are more than just a game; they provide a way to connect, grow, and leave a legacy. For senior Elijah Smith, football has been a central part of his high school experience. Beginning his journey four years ago, he has transformed a casual interest into a passion that has significantly influenced his future.
During his freshman year, Elijah wanted to find a productive way to spend his free time, so he decided to join the football team. He started on the junior varsity team, as most freshmen do, and dedicated himself to improving his skills. By his sophomore year, his hard work paid off, and he was promoted to the varsity team where he played as a cornerback.
This year, Elijah had the honor of wearing Rick Botkin’s jersey number during the annual Rick Botkin Memorial Game. Before the game began, he had the chance to meet Rick Botkin’s family. “I spoke to his family, and it was good to see that he came from such a loving family. It breaks my heart what happened to him,” Elijah remarked. This significant privilege motivated Elijah to lead his team to victory. Winning the game was a way for Elijah and his team to show that everything they do, all the hard work they put in, is to honor those before them, specifically Rick Botkin. “It was an honor to be given the opportunity to celebrate his life and legacy,” he shared.
Throughout his four years playing for Sahuaro, his favorite part has been sharing the sport he loves with his fellow teammates. His time on the team has allowed him to build unbreakable bonds with his team, leaving him with lifelong friends, and keeping him motivated. He credits Kingston Grigsby, his former teammate as his biggest inspiration. “He pushed me to be the best I could be every practice and made sure I stayed on top of myself,” he says.
Although football is his main focus, Elijah also excels in track and field. He joined the team during his sophomore year after his coaches told him how beneficial the sport could be for his football career. His events include the 100m, 200m, and 400m sprints, as well as the long jump and triple jump. “Basically, I do everything,” he laughs.
As Elijah approaches the end of his high school career, he is contemplating his future options. Recently, his hard work and dedication to football paid off when he received an offer to play at Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin. Although he is still undecided about which college he will attend, Ripon is currently his top choice. While he hasn’t yet determined his career path, one thing is certain: Elijah Smith will be playing football in college.
