As a severe winter cold begins to dominate the country’s northern region, blizzard warnings have been announced in three states. The storm began on the West Coast, where it created the first tornado of the year in California.
Since this weekend, these deadly snowstorms have affected millions of people. Schools have been shut down, flights have been delayed or canceled, roads have been closed, and there are barely any means of transportation available.
“On the bus, we really depend on the road conditions,” Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) General Manager Randy Clarke said. “So right now, we’re running what we call severe to lower 40 routes. Normally, we’ve got almost 200. So, we are asking customers if you don’t have to be out, please, just wait.”
Washington, Maryland, and West Virginia were most affected by the first snowstorm of 2025, which dropped at least 6-10 inches of snow.
At least seven deaths, including one child, were caused by the storm across multiple states. The Missouri State Highway Patrol stated that a driver on Interstate 29 in Mount City died after getting out of their vehicle. The car began to slide, hitting the victim, who was from Nebraska.
Another death was reported after a public works employee was struck while carrying out snow removal operations. “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Everett Carter, who dedicated 40 years of service to Jackson County, including the last 8 years with the Public Works team,” Jackson County officials said in a statement.
