Bailey Barger, a senior at Sahuaro High School, is a student with a delightful mix of interests. From art and theater to true crime and forensic science, Bailey’s journey reflects exploration, creativity, and self-discovery. What started as a childhood hobby of drawing has blossomed into a multifaceted passion for problem-solving and creative expression, shaping her aspirations for the future.
Bailey’s artistic beginnings were nurtured by her family, especially her father. They spent countless afternoons building and painting projects, which helped her develop her creative skills. “Whenever my dad would craft something, like a bench or a cross for my mom, I loved painting or staining it alongside him,” she recalls. This hands-on creativity eventually expanded to a shared affection for cars. Bailey and her father have turned something as simple as fixing up vehicles into a bonding experience, which has helped to strengthen their relationship and given them something to connect over.
While Bailey initially explored acting through her school’s theater program, she soon discovered her true enthusiasm lay behind the scenes. This realization prompted her to enroll in a technical theater class, where she found her passion in constructing sets and collaborating with others. Unlike her experiences in a regular art class, which she felt were confining, theater tech offered her the freedom to explore her creativity and craft her own unique style.
Her creativity even ventured into the world of tattoo art. Bailey once aspired to be a tattoo artist and proudly designed the concept for her own tattoo—a meaningful tribute to her dog. “I realized that tattooing would be more of a hobby for me,” she explains. “I enjoy designing, but I don’t picture myself doing it every day.”
Despite her artistic abilities, Bailey’s career ambitions have shifted toward forensic science. A long-standing fascination with true crime and detective work inspired her to pursue a career in crime scene investigation. “I’ve always been captivated by true crime and detective work,” she shared. “When I explored it, I thought, ‘This could be exciting.’” Bailey intends to begin her studies at Pima Community College before transferring to Oregon State University to focus on forensic science.
In addition to her academic and artistic endeavors, Bailey has enhanced her high school experience by hosting exchange students. Her first exchange student, Celine, made a lasting impression. “She was so lively and engaging with everyone,” Bailey remembers. “I hope to visit her in France someday.” Although her second hosting experience was less positive, Bailey still encourages others to host exchange students, viewing it as a chance to make new friends and gain unique cultural insights.
As Bailey prepares to graduate, she reflects on how her interests have shaped her into a well-rounded individual. Whether she’s working on cars with her dad, designing tattoos, or gearing up for a future in forensic science, Bailey is the harmony between creativity and curiosity.
