Sahuaro High School’s football team lost this past Friday, October 25th, 2024, with a score of 50-0. This wasn’t the auspicious ending that fans hoped for, and even though a loss to Mica was expected, a better performance for Homecoming would have been nice.
In the opening two minutes, Mica Mountain scored three touchdowns and converted on an extra point, putting the score at 22-0. The cheer team and marching band tried to keep the spirits high but it just wasn’t enough; throughout the first half, Mica didn’t back down and the score finishing the first half was 35-0.
Though it was not looking good for the football team, we got to see our 2024 Hoco Court winners be crowned. The winners this year were: Mia Payette and Miguel Marcial for the senior class, Jaiden Weisenberger and Mary Andrews from the junior class, Jago Gamez and Brieses Garcia for the sophomore class, and Natalie Garcia and Gage Linsey for the freshmen class. After that, the Sahuaro marching band took the field to perform their 2024 show: Queen.
After the marching band serenaded us with their Queen rendition, the Sahuaro cheer team came out for their short and sweet Homecoming halftime performance. Their performance was great and made the stands go wild.
During the beginning of the third quarter, the newly formed Sahuaro dance team, consisting of four members, came out to perform their prepared upbeat dance to B-Better Have My Money by Rihanna – the remixed version by Black Pink. “I think though we lost, it was still fun and filled of energy,” said Asia Crawford, the dance club president and founder. This sideline performance was not planned to happen at the football game. It was supposed to be scheduled for the last few minutes of the pep rally earlier that day, but the pep rally was cut short by some fooling around in the junior section.
In the second half, Mica came out strong, not losing any energy from the previous half. Unfortunately, our team didn’t gain any momentum and had no scores for the rest of the game while Mica Mountain gained another 15 points.
This ended the game with a rough score of 50-0 meaning our record now stands at 3-5, while Mica is undefeated 8-0. Even though this may have been an expected loss for the Sahuaro Cougars based on each team’s rankings, Mica being 25th and Sahuaro being 115th, the finishing score sent a shock through all of Sahuaro, especially on Homecoming.
