Sahuaro’s first fall movie was planned for October 23rd from 6-8 pm on the Howard Breinig Football Field. The 2005 classic, Corpse Bride, was the intended feature film for around 75 students that evening. Student Council was also set up to sell snacks, drinks, and candy. Unfortunately, after multiple attempts to stabilize the projector, connect to speakers, and liven up the Halloween spirit, the movie night was canceled.
Students showed up with blankets, stuffed animals, and take-out, but despite only being there for around 30 minutes, students were asked to exit the school. The blow-up projector continuously tumbled over, the movie kept pausing, and there was no sound. Moviegoers who spent money on gas and food were not allowed to finish their meals on the grass due to the cancellation. Attendee Lynnea Montgomery said, “I didn’t really care that it got canceled, but like, getting kicked off the field is kind of rude.”
In the future, Student Council plans to remedy the situation by, “…looking to do something hopefully again. Next time we’ll do it indoors so we don’t have to worry about the weather, and the audio will be more available for us to plug into. So those are the two biggest things that I think will make it easier for us to be successful going forward,” Mr. Lopez said.
