In an effort to make the library more inviting, Mrs. Krieg, Mrs. Watters, and last year’s AP Government class decided on an exciting project: the installation of outdoor planters. Recognizing the library’s outdoor decor was a bit bland, Mrs. Krieg and Mrs. Watters brainstormed ways to transform the space into a vibrant garden.
With a successful grant application of $1000, they began to lay the groundwork for their green project. “We had to come up with something,” Mrs. Krieg explained, “so I was like, what about a planter?” This simple yet effective idea took place, and they purchased essential materials like soil, rocks, and various plants, which set the stage for an outdoor space filled with panache. The project is now in the hands of Mrs. Krieg, who is overseeing the planters and the plants. She has taken the responsibility of figuring out when to water the plants and when to plant them. “The plan is to involve Mr. Aaron from the culinary class,” she said. “We can grow different types of herbs that they can use in their cooking, as well as some vegetables. Now is the perfect time to plant vegetables like broccoli, carrots, and radishes.”
Students, teachers, and staff can also help the library transform by donating materials like soil, gardening tools, and other supplies, such as leaf rakes and gardening tools. When the plants begin to flourish, the sense of community and engagement within the school will too, proving that a little green can go a long way in brightening our shared spaces.
