National Honors Society is back at Sahuaro and better than ever. In the past, it hasn’t been the most active club, lacking the core values of the foundation’s mission. This year, a new adviser took over – Mr. Hemmo; he plans to “…gain new members to do some more community service, unite the school, and hopefully get these kids some scholarship money!” Members hope to complete at least 10 hours of community service each year in the club. NHS has had a more lively presence since the takeover. The club has already had two very successful meetings, an extreme difference from previous years.
Sahuaro’s NHS induction was held at 7 PM on Tuesday, September 24th in the Little Theater. Mr. Hemmo opened the ceremony, along with teachers Mr. Alan, Ms. Dara, and Mr. Lopez who gave speeches about the 4 pillars of the organization. Mr. Echols then proceeded to give a guest speech. The ceremony closed with students signing their societal oath and taking a group photo with their certificates.
National Honors Society is a club for specifically selected, well-rounded, high-achieving students. Prospective students are required to submit an application by a deadline set by their school. The application contains questions about demographics, grades, activities in school, and future plans. After submitting, the selected faculty reviews the application and makes a decision. At Sahuaro, acceptees were notified via a letter delivered to English teachers.
NHS has 4 officers: President Diego Del Villar, Vice President Anastasia Bradley, Treasurer Aliana Trotter, and Secretary Sawyer Goitia. These young scholars are ready to be the faces of the club and lead fellow peers in the right direction. Overall, NHS is making a huge comeback, all thanks to Mr. Hemmo, Ms. Grasso, Mr. Lopez, Mr. Alan, Ms. Dara, and Dr. Collingwood. “All the teachers who are serving on the faculty committee are very excited about the large number of members we have this year and we hope to make a huge impact!” exclaims Mr. Hemmo.

It is an honor to work at a school where the NHS is taken seriously, revered, and is doing such great work. I am impressed.
