Sahuaro’s 2024 club fair took place on Monday, September 16th.
The club fair is an opportunity for clubs to showcase their different aspects and possibly recruit new members. The fair consisted of 11 different clubs placed in front of the Egbert Auditorium during lunch.
The Paper Cut is Sahuaro’s online newspaper; what you’re reading right now! The Paper Cut consists of writing articles on major news, personal opinions, and Sahuaro students and events. The newspaper provides an outlet for students to creatively express their emotions and thoughts on the school, and the world. This year’s editors are Marley Gandee, Mia Payette, Tatum Crawford, Zoe Forehand, Nya Brown, and Sarah Bol. The Paper Cut is run through Ms. Lange’s 1st period journalism class in room 207, worth an elective credit.
Vocal Music, Beg is a mixed fine arts class available to all students. Vocal Music, also known as choir, is run by Ms. Barnes. In choir, you learn things such as how to read music, how to sing in pitch, how to use your voice/diaphragm, the meaning behind the songs you sing, and participate in singing circles. If you take a fine arts course for 4 years, you can be eligible for a Seal of Arts; something absolutely worth looking into. Choirs officers are as follows: Zander Basham, Ali Wood, Kaiana Anderson, Adam Singer, Alijah Hayes, Forrest Vol, and Azia Strickland.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes was brought to Sahuaro by Marley Gandee just this past year. This club focuses on athletes strengthening their relationship with God while keeping up their sports performance, and leadership. Coach Haynes, also a pastor, sponsors the club. Meetings are in room 122 every Thursday morning at 8 AM. You can join any time by contacting an officer or member of the club. Officers are Marley Gandee, Diego Del Villar, Jacob Lopez, and Bella Nuun.
Cougar Link Crew is an upperclassman-run club. Juniors and Seniors get assigned 10 freshmen to take under their wing for the next 1-2 years. Upperclassmen also run freshman orientation completely independently. Club members were required to attend 2 days of 4-hour training to prepare for the upcoming school year. In the training, students learned how to run orientation, games to teach to their freshmen, and how to be a real role model to the younger generation.
Robotics Club has almost doubled its size in the past year, going from 12 to 22 members. Robotics enters into tournaments such as High Stakes; in this tournament, each club makes robots to compete in 3 rounds against other high school clubs. The club is led by Mr. Christian and Mr. Davis. Robotics meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-4:30/5:00 in room 404. Robotics officers are Rainey Condor, Nell Kpakpo, Sarah Bol, and Keagan Franklin.
Culinary Club (Chef Me Up!) is run by Mr. Aaron Vanuga, also the teacher for the program. Its officers are Civana Halsey, Jordan Gabarda, Vincent Lescarbeau, and Nya Brown. In Culinary Club, you’ll learn how to cater food events, conversation skills, and more baking than anything. Culinary is also available as a class period, delving much further into the trade. Culinary Club meets every Wednesday morning from 8:00-8:20 AM in room 130 and is always accepting new members.
Asian Student Association is a club sponsored by John Henry Delig. Boa Pham, a senior, started up this club last school year. ASA club is centered around figuring out one’s heritage while also connecting with students from the same culture. Students can join anytime by contacting an officer or messaging their Instagram account. ASA’s officers are Haylee Au, Boa Pham, Ali Wood, and Harmony Twito There will be an interest meeting held on a future date during lunch.
Pharmacy Tech. is an elective class taught by Ms. Kyles in room 308, and on some occasions in 330. In this class, you’ll learn math, compounds, sterile compounds, prescription management, and medications. After successfully completing the program, you’re able to become a certified pharmacy tech. Pharmacy plans to open up a mini student drugstore, selling products like lip balms and body scrubs. This is a 2-year class program available to 10th graders and up.
“…it’s a safe space for most people to be themselves and be creative,” says Callie. In Cosplay club, students will learn how to make costumes, decorate wigs, and meet people with similar interests! Cosplay club is sponsored by Mr. R. Smith. Meetings are held on Thursday from 3:15-4:00 PM in room 206. Officers will be announced after fall break. There is no cutoff date for this club, but if you join right before a big field trip, you’ll have to wait for the next one.
Book club is run by our school’s librarian Mrs. Krieg. Book club meets every Monday in the library from 3:15-4:00 PM. The club officers consist of Jillian Stachowski, Rebecca Martinez, Mia Payette, and Mason King. In book club, you’ll receive about 1 book per month and will be expected to read a certain number of pages by each meeting. In each meeting you’ll mainly go over your thoughts on the book and who will be selling donuts each Wednesday and Friday. Book club usually sells at other school events such as homecoming and spring fling. This club is the perfect place for all the bookworms out there!
Latinos Unidos is a Hispanic central club run by Ms. Evie. Ms. Evie explains the main focus of the club being, “…highlighting Hispanic culture, encouraging and showcasing it to the Sahuaro community through snack sales and hopefully performances. Enhancing culture through taking trips outside of Sahuaro and bringing those back to campus.” Students can join by contacting either Ms. Evie or one of the officers. The officers consist of Diego Del Villa, Aria Lujan, Paul Valenzuela, and Naela Luna.
