Now two road games into their 2024 football season, the Sahuaro Cougars are looking for a win against Douglas High School in their first home match. Here’s a recap of the season so far, highlighting the Cougar’s win against rival Sabino:
Spectators’ cars lined the blocks around Sabino High School on August 30th, parked to watch the annual Sabino versus Sahuaro rivalry football game. With the parking lot packed and the admissions line around the block, everyone knew this would be a big game. For the past 6 years, Sabino has come out with the win, but this year, things took a positive turn for the Cougars when Sahuaro came out on top with a score of 15-14.
“Winning against them (Sabino) and winning with my brothers…there’s no team I would rather do it with,” said senior offensive lineman Jason Aguirre, who is very confident going into the Douglas game because of their win against them last year.
This win against Sabino appeared to be a light guiding our football team to another win, but unfortunately, the Sahuaro Cougars took a loss of 42-7 against Northwest Christian High School on September 6th, which now means that our record is tied 1-1.
Our next game, this Friday, is also our 46th Annual Rick Botkin Memorial game – the longest standing high school football memorial game in the United States.
Even after losing last week, Sahuaro’s football team is ready to play and honor Rick Botkin. Sophomore Anakin Alexander said, “When winning and losing a game we have to bounce back, focus on our mistakes and work harder.”
The Sahuaro Cougars are ready for a big win this week on our home territory. Come watch our varsity football team play Douglas on September 13th. Let’s hope for even better games these next few weeks. Go Cougars!
