Tim Walz is the Democratic party’s nominee for vice president in the 2024 United States election, his running mate being Kamala Harris. Walz wasn’t on anybody’s radar for vice president, so who exactly is he?
Tim Walz was born in West Point, Nebraska, on April 6, 1964. After high school, he enlisted in the National Guard and served for twenty-four years. He attended Chadron State College, graduating with a degree in social science in 1989. While fulfilling his duties in the National Guard, Walz accepted a job as a high school social studies teacher and football coach. His experiences in these roles led him to politics. In 2005, with Minnesota not having a Democratic governor in fourteen years, Walz became involved in politics and won his first election in 2006. He was re-elected as a Minnesota governor for the next five elections. As governor, Walz emphasized the protection of reproductive rights and set the foundation for Minnesota to reach 100% clean electricity by 2040. While in office, Walz signed a bill to provide children and teens across Minnesota free school lunch and breakfast. At a campaign event in Las Vegas, Nevada, he stated, “But you know what? My parents and my community taught me generosity towards my neighbor and to work for the common good.”
In recent news, Walz has been catching some heat from Donald Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, who claimed Tim Walz misrepresented his military service, specifically accusing him of falsely stating that he had served in the war. In this video, Walz said, “We can make sure those weapons of war, that I carried in war, are only carried in war.” However, some may claim that his statement was partially metaphorical and intended to address policy issues regarding military equipment, not to misrepresent his military record.
Tim Walz’s goals for America include addressing climate change, supporting women’s reproductive rights, improving educational opportunities for youth, and expanding affordable healthcare in the United States. Tim Walz has agreed to debate JD Vance on October 1st 2024, the vice presidential debate is set to be hosted by CBS news.
