Russia invaded Ukraine back in February of 2022, a war that is still currently ongoing. Ukraine landed a surprising fightback against Russia and invaded Kursk on August 6th, 2024. As of August 13th, they have taken control of 368 sq miles (1,000 sq km). It is now known what Ukraine wants to do with this territory it has a hold on, it may be used for bargaining into possible peace talks. About 200 citizens of Kursk had fled to Moscow, and 121,000 others have fled elsewhere. As of August 15th, Ukraine had taken control of 80 plus settlements of Kursk. However, both Ukraine and Russia are taking a hard blow, nonetheless, losing many servicemen, tanks, etc. The UK tanks have been used in the invasion, the UK states that they have a “clear right” to do so, this includes any weapons supplied by them for defense.
The territory next to Kursk, Belgorod, has declared a federal-level state of emergency. Ukraine has successfully driven out the Russian Navy from the Black Sea area. Also, it has the ability to hit targets such as airfields and ammo depots that are deeper inside Russia. Russia has attempted to try and stop this invasion by loading and sending tanks to the Kursk region in an attempt to try and hold back Ukrainian forces. Ukraine is nearly 3 weeks into its attack on Kursk and the Russian military states that they have two of their three bridges destroyed or heavily damaged, over Seym near Glushkovo. This bridge was used by the Kremlin to supply its troops.
“Russia brought war to others, and now it is coming home,” President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said in his Monday night address.
