On Wednesday, April 1oth, O.J. Simpson died of prostate cancer at the age of 76. His family announced his death on his official X account on Thursday. They also said, “During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.” It is not clear when the ex-football star was diagnosed with cancer as he denied rumors of a diagnosis or hospice care previous to his death.
Besides playing for the Buffalo Bills NFL team, he captivated the nation as the main suspect in the June 1994 killing of his ex-wife Nicole Brown, and her close friend Ron Goldman. The bodies were found together outside Nicole’s Los Angeles estate. O.J. Simpson remains the media’s main suspect in their murder but was officially acquitted of the charges by a criminal jury case. He however was sued by a separate civil trial jury and was ordered to pay $33.5 million as a liability to the families of Nicole and Ron.
In the wake of O.J.’s death, it has come to the media’s attention that O.J. never fully paid his liability charges to the victim’s families. The reasoning for this is that Simpson claimed he simply didn’t have the money they were owed. Due to unpaid interest charges, Simpson has died owing millions to the Brown and Goldman families. He “died without penance,” according to the Goldman family attorney. Due to this, his estate – even if written in his will – must go through the courts for ownership. Simpson’s team and family have stated that they are going to fight this trial. “It’s my hope that the Goldmans get zero, nothing…them specifically. And I will do everything in my capacity as an executor or personal representative to try and ensure that they get nothing.”
During O.J. Simpson’s final moments, he was surrounded by his close friends and family, including his four children. Even his two youngest children, Sydney and Justin Simpson, mothered by Nicole Brown, who have had a complex but involved relationship with their father after the death of their mother, were by his side. O.J. reportedly died peacefully surrounded by those who cared about him most.
