This past Sunday, The Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII in Las Vegas and are now back-to-back Super Bowl champions. This is the Chief’s third Super Bowl win in five years and their quarterback Patrick Mahomes’s third Super Bowl MVP title.
Going into the game there was a lot of pressure on both teams mainly because it’s the Super Bowl, and fans of the 49ers wanted to see them beat the Chiefs again. The 49ers also had a new quarterback, #13 Brock Purdy, who was drafted as the last pick in 2022, and it was his first Super Bowl.
Before kickoff, Andrea Day came onto the field and sang Lift Every Voice and Sing. America the Beautiful was performed by Post Malone, making it his first-ever Super Bowl performance. Then came out the Joint Armed Forces Color Guard and Reba McEntire for The National Anthem.
During the annual coin toss, four Lahainaluna High School football team members including Morgan “Bula” Montgomery, Teva Loft, Kaulana Tihada, and Kola Watson joined as honorary captains out on the field, recognizing what their team and community went through after the Lahaina fire in 2023. The Chiefs won the coin toss and deferred possession to the second half, letting the 49ers have the ball first.
The 49ers had possession most of the first quarter and did not score. The Chiefs gained the ball with 5 minutes left in the first quarter and made their best effort to get a running start. Patrick Mahomes got sacked almost immediately by Chase Young, a defensive end for the 49ers. Mahomes got sacked again in the next play by Randy Gregory, a linebacker. With 2 minutes left in the first quarter and the 49ers with possession, they were making their way down the field to touchdown territory. Brock Purdy made a pass to Chris Conley, which gained about 20 yards for the 49ers.
Right at the beginning of the second quarter, the 49ers had a close touchdown attempt when the ball was passed to Deebo Samuel in the end-zone; it was pushed out of his hand by Trent McDuffie, a cornerback on the Chiefs. With fourteen minutes left in the first half, Jake Moody, San Francisco’s kicker, made a field goal that earned a Super Bowl distance record of 55 yards, making the score 3-0 in favor of San Francisco.
The Chiefs then gained possession again, and though they gained yards, Isaiah Pacheco lost the ball right next to the end-zone, and Javon Hargrave, defensive tackle for the 49ers, picked it up.
At this point in the game, the Chiefs still hadn’t scored and barely gained yards until Greenlaw exited with a game-ending Achilles tear, and this is where we started to see the 49ers’ defense slipping. L’Jarius Sneed received a 15-yard personal foul for a facemask on pushing Brandon Aiyuk, a wide receiver for the Chiefs.
The San Francisco 49ers pulled a Kansas City classic and went for a trick play touchdown. Brock Purdy passed the ball to Jauan Jennings who passed it to Christian McCaffrey, who ran straight into the endzone with four minutes left in the first half, making the score 10-0 in favor of the 49ers. The Chiefs tried to get themselves a touchdown with multiple passes to Rashee Rice but were unsuccessful. With 20 seconds left in the first half, the Cheifs went for a field goal, which was successful, and finally had a score on the board, leaving it at 10-3 at the end of the first half.
At halftime, American singer-songwriter and dancer Usher came out for his performance. Usher played fourteen songs, some of them with special guests like Alicia Keys, Lil John, Ludacris, and Will.i.am. His setlist included the songs, Caught Up, U Don’t Have to Call, Superstar, Love in This Club, Ain’t Got You, sung by Alicia Keys, My Boo, sung by Alicia Keys and Usher, Confessions Part II, Nice & Slow, Burn, Bad Girl, U Got It Bad, OMG, Turn Down for What, sung by Lil John, and Yeah, sung by Lil John, Ludacris, Will.i.am and Usher.
After halftime, the players came back out and the Chiefs had the ball. Going into the third quarter, Patrick Mahomes tried to make a pass to wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, but the ball was intercepted by Ji’Ayir Brown, safety for the San Francisco 49ers. The Kansas City Chiefs brought out Harrison Butker for a field goal, making the score 10-6, still in favor of the 49ers. Right after that play, the Chiefs started to go for a touchdown and made it with a pass into the endzone with Marquez Valdes-Scantling scoring, making the score 13-10, finally in favor of the Chiefs.
In the fourth quarter, with 11 minutes left in the game, the San Francisco 49ers completed a touchdown from wide receiver Jauan Jennings, leaving the score at 16-13 in favor of the 49ers. Harrison Butker tied the game with a 24-yard field goal, making the score 16-16 with five minutes left in the game. With one minute left in the game, 49ers kicker Jake Moody made a 53-yard field goal making the score 19-16.
There was just enough time left for the Chiefs to make a 29-yard field goal and tie the game with six seconds on the clock, forcing the game into overtime.
During overtime, the 49ers went for a 27-yard field goal, making the score 22-19 in favor of the 49ers. This was a very intense period with the 49ers in the lead; it had everyone sure San Francisco would win Super Bowl 58. The Chiefs recovered the ball and Mecole Hardman scored a touchdown. With that, the Chiefs won Super Bowl 58 with a score of 25-22. The Chiefs are now back-to-back Super Bowl champions and are on the rise to become the first football team to win three times in a row.
