In a remarkable display of compassion and community spirit, Sahuaro High School recently organized a highly successful blood drive. The event was held on October 27, 2023, and brought together students, faculty, and members of the local community, all united by a common purpose: to make a difference in the lives of others through the selfless act of blood donation. With each pint of blood collected, lives were potentially saved, making the blood drive an event of immense significance.
Nick Trujillo, a junior at Sahuaro, was the chair of this year’s blood drive, “My first experience with donating blood was scary at first but after it happened, it wasn’t that bad. And at the end of the day, the small poke of a needle is worth helping the lives of people who go through far worse pain than any of us,” he stated. He also said that his grandpa was his inspiration to start donating blood because his grandpa did so himself. “If anyone wants to participate in a blood drive, they are all around town at different schools and places, you can help save lives too.”
Sophomore Dela Renta Ochoa, and freshman Leilani Lyons both stated that though they can’t donate blood themselves, they are here to support those who do because knowing how many lives are being saved and getting to be part of that is worth it. Dela herself states, “My grandmother had to have a blood transfusion due to cancer and it helped her get better, so it’s nice knowing what donating blood can do to save those in need.”
The blood drive serves as an educational platform, enlightening students about the significance of blood donation. Volunteers and medical professionals involved in the event took the opportunity to dispel common myths and misconceptions surrounding blood donation, empowering students with accurate information. By fostering an understanding of the process and its impact, the event aimed to inspire a lifelong commitment to helping others.
The success of the blood drive would not be possible at Sahuaro High School if we didn’t have the community we have today. This year, Sahuaro High School donated 23 pints of blood. If you want to donate, look around and see how you can. Even if you you can’t donate, just being there to support those who do is enough, and by doing so you’re helping save lives.
