Taylor Swift first announced that she would be re-recording her first 6 albums in 2019 after it was revealed that Scooter Braun sold her masters to US financial firm Shamrock Capital (without consulting with Taylor). Taylor had longed to own her masters since the beginning of her career, and after they were sold she was devastated. She was upset at the situation, but it gave her an idea – re-record the 6 albums that she no longer had the masters to and throw in an incentive so that the fans will be inclined to listen.
Thus was born (Taylor’s Version). Anytime you see (Taylor’s Version) next to a piece of work, it means that Taylor Swift owns it. Taylor released her first rerecord in April of 2021. It was called Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and it was a rerecording of her hit album Fearless, which was originally released in 2009. The incentive in question: vault songs. With each re-recording, she throws in a couple of unreleased songs so that it builds up more anticipation. Since then, she has released the re-records of her 2010 album Speak Now and her 2012 album Red.
As of 8/9, Taylor Swift has announced the re-recording of her most commercially successful album, 1989. Being one of the most awarded pop albums of all time, there is a lot of high anticipation for this album. Taylor herself said in her Instagram post announcing the album, “To be perfectly honest, this is my most FAVORITE re-record I’ve ever done.”
