Scream VI Review

Scream VI Review

Scream VI is a movie that had me slightly worried. When it comes to horror franchises, the movies typically aren’t very good by the sixth or seventh installment. This has happened with Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Child’s Play to name a few. Thankfully the Scream series did not continue this trend. Scream VI is absolutely amazing.

It is a perfect follow-up to the last one and it even addresses some of the criticisms of its predecessor. When Scream (2022) was released, everyone was kind of upset about the lack of the chase scenes that are so prominent in the previous Scream movies. People were worried that without the chase scenes, there would be very little suspense. Well, I can confidently say, the issue with the last movie has been thoroughly remedied because Scream VI has some of the most intense chase scenes in the series. There is a chase scene with this movie’s Ghostface and Gale Weathers (played by Courteney Cox) whom I believe to be the best chase in the series.

The characters in Scream VI are some of my favorites in the series. Melissa Barrera does an amazing job in the lead role. Jenna Ortega, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Dermot Mulroney are all fantastic in their roles as well. While the main focus is on the newer characters, they also bring back characters not just from the original, like Gale Weathers and Billy Loomis (played by Skeet Ulrich), but also some from the more recent movies like Kirby Reed (played by Hayden Panettiere) from Scream 4. But of course, as usual, the star of the show is Ghostface himself. This time around Ghostface’s stunts are done by a stunt performer named Max Laferriere. He is one of the most terrifying Ghostfaces in the entire Scream series. Usually, we’ll see Ghostface trip over something comically and get somewhat easily overpowered by the protagonists. Conversely, Laferriere plays Ghostface as a lot more of a competent and threatening presence that is capable of vaulting over couches and that takes three people just to hold down for a minute. Overall he plays the character in a way that makes him look a lot scarier than he’s been in the past. And as usual, Roger L. Jackson (the voice of Ghostface) is phenomenal. With these two working together Ghostface is the scariest he’s ever been.

Overall Scream VI is an amazing horror movie. I didn’t talk about the story because it’s best to go in completely blind, only knowing what happens in the previous movies. It is absolutely worth it.
