For a great number of Americans, college seems to be just a dream due to the cost to attend. Most students have to take out loans fear that they will not be able to pay them back. President Biden has proposed a plan to provide relief to those in student loan debt. “President Biden believes that a post-high school education should be a ticket to a middle-class life, but for too many, the cost of borrowing for college is a lifelong burden that deprives them of that opportunity. During the campaign, he promised to provide student debt relief. Today, the Biden Administration is following through on that promise and providing families breathing room as they prepare to start re-paying loans after the economic crisis brought on by the pandemic,” said the Biden Administration.

So what are the key elements of this plan? The Department of Education will provide debt forgiveness up to 20,000 dollars depending on the person’s income, and if you received a federal Pell Grant or not. Up to $20,000 will be forgiven to those who received a Pell Grant and have outstanding loans; up to $10,000 will be forgiven to those who did not receive a Federal Pell Grant and have outstanding loans. To be eligible for this plan, your individual income can not exceed $125,000.

On February 28th, the Supreme Court began to hear the proposal. Two testimonies were given against President Biden’s policy and it is predicted that the Supreme Court will rule against President Biden due to conservative majority within the Supreme Court.

The idea of this debt forgiveness strikes a great amount of controversy. Some taxpayers are frustrated with this concept and ask the question, “Why should I have to pay for someone else to go to college?” Some people agree with this proposal and think that the amount of student loan debt in America is outrageous.
