Superbowl LVI Halftime Show
February 18, 2022
Iconic. Nostalgic. Cinematic. Those are three words I would use to describe this past Superbowl halftime show. The collaboration was epic: Mary J Blige, 50 cent, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem, and Kendrick Lamar in one performance. Amazing, right? Singing absolute classics such as Next Episode, Still Dre, Family Affair, and more. Songs of which I grew up listening to. During the show, Dr. Dre plays a sample of I Ain’t Mad at Cha by Tupac as a tribute to him. There were speculations about a hologram of Tupac that would be performing the song I Ain’t Mad at Cha, yet that didn’t occur. It would’ve been nice to see that take place, however, the performance was still worthwhile. The transitions from song to song were very creative and just flowed together perfectly. I enjoyed watching all performances, although I have my favorites. These performances were Kendrick Lamar singing Alright and Mary J Blige singing Family Affair. I felt these performances were the most energetic from both the artists and the dancers and I loved it. I could feel their passion for the music through the screen.
The memes. Just the memes that circulated from this performance are actually hard not to laugh at. Like 50 cent’s entrance of hanging upside down has been constantly made fun of. I mean I really want to know why that was his entrance. Like…what? But his entrance can’t be the only thing we focus on. Mary J Blige’s outfit was spectacular. The reflective pieces and the crystals were everything.
I believe this is one of the first Superbowl Halftime shows where the performers were predominantly Black and I love it, it’s nice to see so much representation of successful Black artists.
