Although many people looked amazing at the Met Gala this year, there were definitely some questionable outfit choices. Most celebrities played it safe, but a few guests used their outfits to make political statements about America, sparking a lot of controversy. Carolyn Bosher Maloney’s vibrant multi-colored look had the phrase “Equal Rights for Women” in all caps on it, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wore a white off-the-shoulder dress with the phrase “Tax the Rich” in red satin on the back, and Cara Delevingne wore a skin-baring vest with the phrase “Peg the Patriarchy.” All of their outfits garnered lots of attention but it’s definitely safe to say they were proud to show off their political beliefs at the Gala.

An outfit that had everyone in shock this year was Kim Kardashian’s head-to-toe black Balenciaga bodysuit that even hid her face. No one expected an outfit like this from her because not once has she been disappointed at the Met Gala. Some are confused about the meaning of the dress and how it’s related to the Gala’s theme, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” Everyone has had their own interpretation of what the dress means but some people believe the outfit was partly inspired by Kim’s ex-husband, Kanye West, and his most recent album Donda. There’s been so much controversy about her outfit on social media and many have criticized her because they think she should’ve made a bigger political statement or they just thought the outfit was ugly and ridiculous.

Billie Eilish used her power for good and this is one of the most positive controversies from the Met Gala this year. She agreed to wear Oscar de la Renta if and only the brand promised to go fur-free which made a lot of fans and people in general happy to hear. One of the strangest and most confusing outfits of the night was from Frank Ocean who brought a neon green animatronic doll that moved and blinked, who Frank said was inspired by “movie magic” and “America.”

The last guest to show up was Rihanna who made an epic return with her boyfriend A$AP Rocky. The couple turned heads due to their unique outfits. Rihanna walked in wearing an all-black Balenciaga outfit with a ruffled coat and a matching hat and A$AP Rocky was wearing a colorful quilted gown. Fans were confused on the meaning of her outfit but she later stated in an interview that the inspiration was a black hoodie, “The thing we’re usually incriminated by as black people… I wanted to empower that. I wanted to take it and make it mine and make it fashion.” And I personally think she did just that. A$AP Rocky wore a simple tuxedo under his quilt-cape by ERL which was inspired by American ‘memory quilts’ and the outfit stirred lots of attention.

After a long year of waiting the Met Gala was back and it’s safe to say these celebrities made a great comeback and even some of the first-timers shocked crowds and the media with their outfit choices being very bold and questionable.
