Former President Trump’s New Team of Lawyers
Trump Names New Defense Team Including Bruce Castor The Cosby Ableist And Epstein-tied David Shoen
February 5, 2021
Former President Donald Trump has named a new impeachment legal team, just one day after all five of the lawyers leading his defense left on account of Trump wanting to use his baseless election fraud claims as part of his defense. The attorneys, Bruce Castor and David Schoen, will now lead Trump’s defense and it is expected that Trump’s defense strategy will aim to prove that free speech makes up for inciting a riot and that the impeachment is unconstitutional now that he is no longer in office.
Bruce Castor is a former district attorney and longtime Republican politician in Pennsylvania best known for refusing to charge comedian Bill Cosby with sexual assault a decade before the accused serial rapist was finally brought to justice. In 2005, when Castor was district attorney in Pennsylvania’s Montgomery County, he infamously declined to prosecute Cosby after one of his more than 60 accusers, Andrea Constand, alleged that he had sexually assaulted her. Castor cited a lack of evidence for his decision, but had allegedly offered Cosby a secret immunity agreement. Castor’s successor reopened the case in 2015 and was ultimately able to convict Cosby for the crime. Castor later served as solicitor general and acting attorney general of Pennsylvania.
David Schoen is a longtime trial lawyer who previously represented Roger Stone during his sentencing and appeal after the longtime Trump associate was convicted of obstruction, witness tampering, and other felonies committed amid Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. (Trump later commuted Stone’s sentence, then eventually pardoned him before leaving office.) Schoen also met with Jeffrey Epstein days before the notorious sex trafficker and pedophile was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell of an apparent suicide. Schoen later said they agreed during the meeting to add him to Epstein’s legal team, and that he believed Epstein had not died by suicide.
This second impeachment trial comes after the House of Representatives voted 232-197 to impeach the former president with lawmakers voting just one week after violent pro-Trump loyalists stormed the Capitol, cheered on by the president’s calls for them to “fight like hell” against the election results.
The four-page article of impeachment says that Trump “gravely endangered the security of the United States and its institutions of Government.” Opening arguments in the Senate impeachment trial will begin the week of Feb. 8. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced the schedule after reaching an agreement with Republicans, who had pushed for a delay to give Trump a chance to organize his legal team and prepare a defense that actually wants to defend him.
On the opening page of Donald Trump’s legal brief, his hotshot new lawyers misspelled the name of the country they’ve called home for over 30 years, filing the document that addressed “Members of the Unites States Senate,” whoever that is…
The typo was at the top of a 14-page brief filed ahead of Trump’s impeachment trial in the United States Senate. It argued that impeaching a former president would be unconstitutional, even though the Senate has previously impeached several public officials who were no longer in office.
Senate Republicans voted overwhelmingly in late January against moving forward with the trial, making clear a conviction is unlikely as 17 senate republicans are needed to convict the former president.
No matter what happens at this trial, let’s all agree to leave this orange man in the past…
