The 77th Annual Golden Globes Notable Moments
January 15, 2020
The 77th Golden Globe Awards took place on January 5th, 2020, and rang in quite a few memorable and viral moments. Notable moments at the 2020 Golden Globes had a plenitude of Asian representation. Asian-American actress Awkwafina made history after winning the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for The Farewell, the first for a woman of Asian descent.
Her win follows film Parasite who won Best Foreign Film. Bong Joon-Ho, the director of Parasite, takes the moment to call out Hollywood for their aversion of foreign films, stating, “Once you overcome the one-inch tall barriers of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.”
Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood took the prize for best film in the comedy or musical category, as well as best screenplay and best supporting actor for Brad Pitt.
Michelle Williams, who won Best Actress in a Television Drama for Fosse/Verdon, stressed the importance of women voting in 2020 and support for women’s right to choose.
Ramy Youssef accepted the award for best performance by an actor in a television series, musical or comedy, for his show Ramy.
The best actor in a musical or comedy went to Taron Egerton for his portrayal of British pop singer Elton John in Rocketman.
Ricky Gervais, who hosted the show for the fifth (and final) time, seemed fed up with Hollywood. “If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech. You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than [teen climate activist] Greta Thunberg. So, if you win: Come up, accept your little award thank your agent and your God and … off. It’s already three hours long.” Amen!
