Kamala Harris Drops out of 2020 Presidential Race
December 9, 2019
California Senator Kamala Harris, the third African-American woman to ever run for President of the United States and the only African-American woman in the 2020 race, has officially dropped out of the presidential race as of December 3rd, 2019.
Democratic Senator Harris broke the news to her supporters via the video below.
The emotional video expresses her regretfulness for dropping out, calling it “one of the hardest decisions of my life,” and one she had made over the last few days, Senator Harris said her campaign “simply doesn’t have the financial resources we need to continue. I’m not a billionaire. I can’t fund my own campaign,” she said. “And as the campaign has gone on, it’s become harder and harder to raise the money we need to compete.” She continued, “In good faith, I can’t tell you, my supporters and volunteers, that I have a path forward if I don’t believe I do. So, to you my supporters, it is with deep regret — but also with deep gratitude — that I am suspending my campaign today.”
The first-ever African-American woman to run for president was Shirley Chisholm in 1972, although she was unsuccessful, she inspired many racially diverse people to run.
The second-ever African-American woman to run for president was former Illinois Senator, Carol Moseley-Braun. Senator Mosely-Braun ran in 2004 but lost to George W. Bush.
Twitter user Brian Tyler Cohen, a political host for OccupyDemocrats, optimistically replied to Senator Harris’ drop out announcement pictured below:
Former Vice President Joe Biden said he would “definitely” consider Sen. Kamala Harris as a potential running mate, a day after she dropped out of the presidential race.
