The State of the Union Address is a yearly event delivered each January (although it was delayed this year due to the government shutdown) by the president of the US to Congress, giving the administration’s view of the state of the nation and plans for legislation. It is also a SUPER important event for Americans to watch, because it is full of pertinent information and the future of the country. February 5th is when the address was held, and lots of important topics were brought up. Here’s the 5 key topics that were mentioned in the address from The New York Times:

THE ECONOMY:

He begins by saying that U.S.M.C.A. will replace NAFTA, and will deliver for Americans. “An economic miracle is taking place in the United States, and the only thing that can stop it is foolish wars, politics or ridiculous partisan  investigations.”

IMMIGRATION: 

“Most in this room voted to build the wall, and the wall never got built. I will get it built.” This caused an uproar of applause in the room, but received some annoyed looks by Democrats. Trump says that the only thing separating the working class and the political class is immigration. Trump states that wealthy politicians, and donors push for open boarders are the ones living behind lavish gates – that the working class are the ones that will be impacted directly.

WOMEN: 

One surprising topic that was covered is women. He goes on to actually congratulate the women due to the fact that Congress now has more women than ever, and more women in the workforce than before, which gained him a standing ovation – even by speaker, Nancy Pelosi. Trump jokes and says, “You weren’t supposed to do that.”

ABORTION:

Trumps went on to say how he wants to pass law to end late-term abortions where the fetus can feel pain. “To defend the dignity of every person.”

FOREIGN POLICY:

“Great nations do not fight endless wars.” Trump says that he thinks if he wouldn’t have been elected, then the United States would be in a major war with North Korea. Trump announced that he and the North Korean leader will meet again on Feb. 27th + 28th in Vietnam. As for ISIS and their control that they had before Trump took office. he says that now they have virtually liberated the territory from the grip of these “bloodthirsty monsters.” “It’s time to bring these brave soldiers home.”
