CBD Oil - Benefits And Side Effects

Jamie Beck, Fine Arts/ Slide Show editor

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is made from strains of cannabis that contains low levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which is what makes marijuana psychoactive. The non-intoxicating marijuana extract is being credited with helping treat lots of medical problems; like seizures, anxiety, inflammation, and sleeplessness; but is it safe?

CBD oil is legal in 30 states where medicinal and recreational marijuana is legal. In 14 states there are specific CBD oil laws with patients experiencing seizures, muscle spasms, and epilepsy. Those states include Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Tennessee. Most people take or apply the CBD oil to treat a variety of symptoms, but its use is arguable. There is still some confusion about what it is and how it affects the human body.

Benefits:

People tend to use prescriptions or over-the-counter drugs to relieve stiffness and pain, including chronic pains, which is one reason for the opioid epidemic. Some people believe that the CBD oil is a more natural substitute. CBD oil also may help treat acne due to its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to control the overproduction of sebum from the sebaceous glands.

Anxiety:

Doctors have advised people with long term anxiety to avoid CBD oil, as the THC can trigger or increase feelings of anxiousness and paranoia. However authors of a review from Nerotherapeutics  found that CBD may help to reduce anxiety and other disorders like:

  • post-traumatic stress disorder
  • general anxiety disorder
  • panic disorder
  • social anxiety disorder
  • obsessive-compulsive disorder

Side Effects:

  • low blood pressure
  • dry mouth
  • drowsiness
  • anxiety
  • changes in appetite
  • changes in mood
  • diarrhea
  • nausea
