  • SCIENTIST RESTORE SIGHT TO TWO BLIND PEOPLE. Medics at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London have successfully repaired vision in two patients suffering from age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using stem cells. Both of the patients here had “wet” AMD, which is caused by abnormal blood vessels that leak fluid or blood onto the macula. The macula is an important part of the eye’s retina made up of light-sensing rod and cone cells and a nourishing layer of cells called the retinal pigment epithelium. This whole thing is raising hopes that similar sight-restoring treatments will be available “off-the-shelf” within five years.

  • SPACE X LAUNCH. The Falcon 9 is a two-stage rocket. Designed and manufactured by SpaceX for the reliable and safe transport of satellites and the “Dragon Spacecraft” into orbit. Falcon 9 is the first orbital class rocket capable of re-flight. SpaceX believes rocket re-usability is the key breakthrough needed to reduce the cost of access to space and enable people to live on other planets. The planet-hunting Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite was launched in April of this year

  • CHINESE SCIENTISTS CLONE MONKEYS. Scientists in China have successfully coned a long-tailed macaques using the same process they used to clone Dolly the sheep more than twenty years ago. The process in which they used is called somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), which involves transferring the nucleus of a cell, which includes its DNA, into an egg which has had its nucleus removed. The two monkeys are now genetically identical and scientists believe they have “broken the barrier” in human cloning. “Zhong Zhong” and “Hua Hua” are the names of these monkeys. Which is which? Don’t know, they kinda look…the same:)

  • GOLDEN STATE KILLER-DNA PROVED. Joseph DeAngelo’s was accused of multiple rapes and murders. All in which were committed between 1976 and 1986. The now 72-year-old man, who terrorized California for years, was finally caught using a new technology that the authorities used to connect the killer’s DNA to all the rape cases. The item that they got his DNA from, still untold, was discarded by DeAngelo—but they still had enough DNA left to provide the evidence leading to his arrest.

  • LONGEST LUNAR ECLIPSE OF THE CENTURY. The full moon on the night of July 27-28, 2018, presents the longest total lunar eclipse of the 20th and 21st century. The total phase of the eclipse – called the totality – lasted 103 min.

  • MUMMIES FOUND IN EGYPT. 3,800 year-old mummies were discovered in the west bank of the Nile River in Luxor. The tomb was likely built during the 18th Dynasty (1550–1298 B.C.), but the team of archaeologists thinks it was opened during the 21st Dynasty (about 3,500 years ago) to add additional mummies (and artifacts) to protect them from tomb raiders.

  • 3,200-YEAR-OLD CHEESE FOUND IN TOMB. Along with the mummies came with, what is now known as the worlds “oldest snack.” Archaeologists found jars filled with a solid white substance and suspected it might have been food, and they were right. Further testing has proven that the substance is, indeed, a 3,200-year-old cheese. Wondering what cheese was like with the Egyptians? Well according to Times, it would be high in moisture and spreadable. Along with being very very bitter. Yes, even when putting important things to take into the after life, Egyptians figured maybe they’d want some cheese to snack on while going to the afterlife.

  • PIRATE BOOTY FOUND IN COLUMBIA. The treasure is said to be worth $17 Billion and as old as 300-years. For years researcher were trying to find the sunken Spanish ship but with no avail, until now. Divers can’t really reach most of the sunken treasures because of how low they are. They can be as low as 4,000-6,000 feet below sea level. It was finally discovered off the coast of Cartegena, Colombia, in 2015. But details of the find were kept under wraps until now — when researchers with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) got the blessing of various governments to disclose them.

  • PARKER-SOLAR PROBE CAME CLOSEST TO THE SUN. On October 29, 2018 the Parker Solar Probe became the craft that came the closest to the sun. It passed within 26.55 million miles of the Sun’s surface. It may not sound close, but in space, that’s a pretty big deal. The old record was 26.55 million miles. The Parker Solar Probe will achieve its first perihelion, the point on its orbit when it is closest to the sun. Flying through material that reaches as high as 3.6 million degrees Fahrenheit, the spacecraft will travel within 15 million miles of the sun’s surface and reach a top speed of 213,200 miles per hour.

  • NEW DINOSAUR SPECIES FOUND. Palaeontologists have unearthed the remains of a previously unknown species of dinosaur that lived 110 million years ago in Argentina. The remains of three separate members of the new species, an adult and two juveniles, were discovered by a team of Spanish and Argentinian scientists at a site in Neuquen in the center of the South American country. The new species, named Lavocatisaurus agrioensi, is a member of the herbivourous group of dinosaurs known as sauropods, which includes the likes of the diplodocus and brontosaurus.
