The Seattle Mariners of Major League Baseball are under investigation of racial discrimination by the general manager, the manager, and the director of player development.

Lorena Martin, the Mariners former director of high performance was fired on October 10 for undisclosed reasons.  Lorena Martin was quoted saying that she “had reported many other discriminatory incidences to HR and other Mariners staff members throughout the season.” Martin further accused Mariners GM Jerry DiPoto, manager Scott Servais, and director of player development Andy McKay of calling the Latino players-primarily from the Dominican Republic- “dumb” and “stupid.” When some of her responsibilities were being handed to McKay, she told DiPoto about it. DiPoto is accused of saying, “You know what you are? You are a cocky latina.”

Martin had been hired to coordinate all aspects of the Mariners’ physical and mental training approach of players and staff, including overseeing the entire organization’s medical, strength and conditioning, nutrition and mental skills departments. The Mariners are denying the allegations saying that Martin didn’t make any of the claims until after her firing. “The Mariners categorically deny that any member of our management or coaching staff made racist remarks regarding any of our players or staff. Additionally, we have not terminated (or threatened to terminate) any trainers during the offseason.” The MLB is still currently investigating.
