Sahuaro's Girls Golf State Results

Sahuaro’s Girls Golf team came in 8th place for their State tournament. The goal for the girls, two-time State champions, was to be in the top 10, and they successfully did that. Halley Hughes, senior, shot the best score during this tournament – a 78 on 18 holes, which is only 5 over par, making her the 8th best golfer out of about 75 players, comprised of 12 teams that attended this tournament. The girls played their tournament at Omni Tucson National Golf Course on October 22nd and 23rd.

The team said that they would have possibly gotten 7th place if they got to play the second day, but they didn’t because of weather complications. Overall, they had fun in this tournament and said that they bonded as a team, and that was the most important part of this event. Serenity Guerrero, senior, said, “We were having a great time and it really sucked when the storm came, but we still got to bond as a team and hang out during this tournament.” If it wasn’t for the rain, our girls team would have had a better chance to advance higher in this competition. The girls even decorated their van to celebrate going to State and to show off a little bit as well!

The team, however, did win their section (division) and this is their 7th year in a row winning their section.

Mrs. Hughes, the girls golf coach, said that she will probably coach golf next year, but it will be a different feeling because for her 7 years of coaching, she has always had a daughter on the team and next year will be the first year without a daughter on the team.

Mrs. Hughes said that over the year people would always ask, “Do you guys really practice on Fridays?” She would only say, “Yes! because to be the best team, you need to practice as much as you can.”  A word of advice from her to next year’s team is, “You need to practice year round; you can’t just wait until the season starts to pick up a club because it’s a difficult sport and you can’t lose the habit of playing.”

Congratulations to Sahuaro’s Girls’ Golf team and their astounding season!
