West and Trump: Face to Face at Last
October 31, 2018
The meeting between Kanye West and Donald Trump took place on Thursday, October 11th. The meeting was originally scheduled for a discussion about prison reform, manufacturing, gang violence, and other pressing issues. There were also times when it was much more of Kanye delivering monologues on various topics, including how putting on the Make America Great Again hat made him feel like a true man, like Superman, and how Hillary’s campaign did not make him feel that way. He also went into detail about why he feels he was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Most controversially he talked about abolishing the 13th Amendment even though he previously recanted that statement, calling it a trap door because it can be used in prison to enslave prisoners legally.
The meeting was also attended by Jim Brown, former player for the Cleveland Browns. He spent his time at the meeting by praising Trump for his work with North Korea.
Kanye also was there advocating for Larry Hoover, who is a 68-year- old man serving 6 consecutive life sentences at a super-maximum security prison. He was convicted of crimes, such as conspiracy to commit murder and other crimes connected with his role as a leader of the Chicago gang. Hoover’s lawyer also stated that some of the crimes were alleged and that even if he did commit them he was facing too harsh of a sentence.
Kanye said toward the end of the meeting, “What I need Saturday Night Live to improve on, or what I need the liberals to improve on is, if he don’t look good, we don’t look good. This is our President.” President Trump and Brown both seemed to agree with this: however that did not stop SNL from spoofing the meeting.
It is unclear at this point what the meeting accomplished, other than the fact that it brought a new conversation to certain issues.
UPDATE: Rapper and designer, Kanye West, said on Twitter that he plans on “distancing” himself from politics, alleging he’s being “used to spread messages I don’t believe in”.
