On Friday, September 28th, eastern Sulawesi island was destroyed after a devastating 7.5 magnitude quake led to a shattering tsunami, leaving many left under the rubble unable to escape.

The death toll keeps rising every hour; from 844 on Monday to 1400 by our Fall Break.  There is a lack of power and ways to communicate.  For help, the Indonesian government has requested mass graves to be dug and declared a 14 day state of emergency. Many family members having already lost their home, have little hope to finding their other family members.

The Washington post interviewed a young boy who was wandering a beach side when the quake and waves pulled him under. “I’m still in pain,” is all he told the Post after he finally regained consciousness. To top off the horrors, the Indonesian people are facing, the Mount Soputan on Sulawesi island has just erupted in the morning of October 3. “More than 6,000 meters (19,700 feet) into the sky,” of ash has spewed and “No evacuations were immediately ordered,” according to ABC news.
