New Security Measures at Sahuaro High School
August 24, 2018
We’re 21 weeks into 2018, and there have already been 23 school shootings where someone was hurt or killed. That averages out to more than 1 shooting a week. This puts everyone, from students to parents to teachers on edge. For example, when a rock was thrown through a classroom window last year, the students who were in the classroom at the time hid under their desks because they thought it was a gun shot. Before anyone could figure out what it was a monitor came in to make sure it wasn’t anything more serious. Sahuaro is trying their best to make the school a better place.
“Wearing our ID’s let’s everyone know that we are staff and students here at Sahuaro,” Ms. Lynne from the attendance office said. Mr. Davis, an Algebra 2 teacher, said, “It’s a realistic attempt to fix things.” Mr. Shingler is a World History teacher, and he stated, “I think the ID’s are helping a lot. It let’s us know who the students are.”
Sahuaro High School has started a new security measure in the 2018-2019 school year starting with school ID’s. Students, faculty, and staff are required to wear their ID’s while on campus. Everyone is asked to wear them so they are easily identified as someone who is supposed to be on campus and if any new students or anyone in general have questions or concerns, they can feel safe going to someone who has an ID. If students don’t wear their ID around their neck or clipped on somewhere visible, there will be consequences. If students are asked more than once to put it on and it continues to be an issue, students will be put in detention. Depending on the times they are asked will determine whether they will have lunch detention or after school detention. If a student loses their ID, they are required to get a new one at the cost of $3.00.
Another new security starting this year is locked gates around campus everyday. At a specific time, the gates will be locked and students will have to enter through the main office. When a student approaches the double doors they are required to push the buzzer and show their ID through the camera. When the ID is visible, the students will be buzzed in by either Ms. Paula, the office manager, or by Ms. Lynne in the attendance office. If students don’t have their ID when approaching the double doors, their name will be written down and that will be their first warning. When it comes down to the safety at Sahuaro High School, Mr. Estrella, the principal, is doing his best to make sure the school is a safe place.
