The country was shook by yet another school shooting on Tuesday, March 20, after 17-year old Austin Wyatt Rollins shot two other students at Great Mills High School.

The 9-1-1 calls were made before classes had started, at 7:58 a.m. It was at 7:50 a.m. when Rollins parked his vehicle in the parking lot; 7:52 a.m., when he entered the school; and 7:57 a.m. when he approached one of the victims, giving her a fatal wound.

That victim was 16-year old Jaelynn Willey and she was shot in the head, dying after being taken off of life support two days after the shooting. Police say that Willey and Rollins had a relationship previous to the shooting, but it had come to an end recently, meaning that the shooting wasn’t random.

The second victim, Desmond Barnes, was a 14-year old boy who was shot in the leg and quickly took shelter in a nearby classroom. Luckily, he survived the bullet and was released from the hospital the next day.

The school’s resource officer, Blaine Gaskill, found Rollins in just three minutes and shot a bullet at his hand just as Rollins pulled the trigger of the Glock 9-millimeter pistol, owned by his father, on himself. However, it wasn’t until March 27 that we knew that it was his bullet that had actually killed him and not Gaskill’s bullet. Still, St. Mary’s County Sheriff Tim Cameron was happy with Gaskill’s work and said that “he responded exactly how we train our personnel to respond.”
